Advice for Making a Career Change
Have you ever shifted from a BPO to IT? Here’s a case where an individual is stuck. He needs an appropriate solution:
I have completed my BCA graduation in 2007 and am working in a BPO company. I would like to shift my career from BPO to Software industry but the problem is that no software company wants to recruit me because I completed my degree long back. I did a diploma course in Oracle hoping that this could help me have a switch-over but all I could do was end up with frustration.
Wherever I go, they ask for experience. I have got the skills that employers want but I have never been given a chance to take up the interview. I worked hard to learn Oracle. Honestly, I have tried 13 software companies in Chennai but they don’t even consider my resume (Note: All of them said neither my BPO experience will be counted nor will I be considered as a fresher). Everybody pushes me to put fake experience in my resume but I never want to do that. Having said that, I cannot give up trying for a software job since I spent a lot of money on learning Oracle.
My Question is:
- Why am I being denied by these software companies even though I have got the skills?
- Is the recruitment system in our software companies fair?
Few options to switch to an IT firm are as suggested below:
Joining any IT organization with an ITO arm, such as Accenture, Mphasis and Wipro, which have few units such as Service Desk or other ITO business. This kind of role would value the BPO experience. Furthermore these firms have a policy of Internal Transfer which can be availed after working for 18 months. The employee can apply for vertical transfer internally, through IJP. Here the transition from ITO to IT would be possible, when coupled with an equally good internal career path.
Joining a smaller IT organization or even a start-up firm which will need these skill sets , but might not keep a prior experience as a deal breaker.
A certification or even a skill upgrade. Even though Oracle certification was completed, it did not result with a job. Hence an upgrade to make it marketable stands as an option. A PMP certification is an option, though placement would depend on the projects handled. A Six Sigma Certification is another option that can be considered.
Projects available online can be availed, but that will only add to the experience. It cannot offer a direct employment.
There are a few more options to move into IT Jobs
Your previous experience in BPO will not be of much value in the IT space unless you have had a chance to do some technical work in the IT department of a BPO. You will effectively be starting from scratch with a salary reduction. This does not mean that a shift to IT is entirely impossible; all I am trying to say is that you will need to have realistic expectations for the initial 3 to 5 years which is the minimum period for developing skills in the programming space. And talking about working in software company you should have good knowledge about domain you want to work on like…Java,C#,.Net……etc
2. Microsoft System Administrator ( active directory admin, exchange admin
Software developer ( java, c#, .net)
Software testing engineer ( white box testing, manual testing, automation etc)
As you might be aware that currently India is in “Remote IT Infrastructure Management” wave. Means we have good global demand for IT support administrators. Vast openings are there with real handsome pay. Fresher’s/BPO Guys with <1 year Experience – Atleast 15-20 K / month.
Basically you need to do is:
Learn Live aspects and concepts
Pursue Microsoft Exchange Certificate from Microsoft ( Around 4K)
Groom your resume with Exchange Admin Skills and Certificates
Prepare for Interview with Interview questions

You should take admission in IT firm like NIIT(National Institute of Information Technology) OR, IIHT(Indian Institute of Hardware Technology) for some good course(Programming Language/ Networking) like C/C++, JAVA, .NET, ORACLE, CCNA etc.
These courses are too much useful for switching to IT field from BPO.
These institutes take some money and you will be awarded the degree after generally 6th month of your admission.
You can get the chance for campus placement in various IT industries like Infosys, Wipro, TCS, CTS through these institutes.
In addition you can attend the OFF campusing from various IT industry. You have to alert for it.
OR, you can upload your CV and details in the Official Website of Software Company in which you are interested.
How to change from BPO to IT or SAP consultant sector?
First you take time and decide on which module you would like to build your career. E.g. SAP SCM or MM. Right now market is hot for both the modules.
Try to work on the MM module projects in any SMALL or training institutes where you will get the project experiences.
Once you work completing the live projects in small or any institutions then put the same in your resume which adds a value to the CV.
But this live project experience can be got parallel to your current job.
Update your resume with whatever experience you have and upload in any job sites. I am sure you will get calls from good reputed companies.
Also keep one thing in mind, to switch to some other company, it might take some time. So need not be disheartened. Keep trying.
